How is tension and
suspense created through media language in the TV scene
Tension
and suspense is created, as it starts with a diegetic sound of thunder and
lightning and a close up of a TV that turns to static. This creates tension and
suspense because it connotes there is a power-cut or a ghostly intervention.
The
TV screen stays distorted as the girl tries to fix it, with a over the shoulder
camera shot. There is then CGI editing to a guy on a chair behind her, to make
a sort of reflection. The camera does a swish pan around to the chair, along
with a creepy ‘whoosh’ sound and the girls heavy breathing. There is special
effects to make the TV remote float which also adds suspense. When the TV
remote falls to the floor, an non-diegetic eerie sound has played and the
camera tilts down along with the remote and you don’t know where the ghost
went. As it switches between the chair and the girl, the is music which creates
suspense until a ghostly character appears behind her and frightens her. This has
created tension as the switches between the girl and chair makes you think
something is going to happen, as before when there we suspense scenes, not much
happened.
